FAQ
What is the Salon des Refusés?
The Salon was conceived as a response to the upcoming River City Biennale. The RCB has raised the bar for the inclusion of artists in a juried process, and this Salon des Refusés will offer the Wichita viewing public the opportunity for a larger dialog about influential artists in the Wichita area, some of which were eliminated from the RCB during the jury process and others who were nominated by peers.
The Salon des Refusés is a historical reference to the state-sponsored 1863 exhibition of artwork (some 3,000 pieces) which were rejected from the official Paris Salon. Napoleon III wanted to let the public have the final say regarding the legitimacy of the work, resulting in a show adjacent to the Paris Salon. Since then, Salon des Refusés shows have come to represent the "rejects" from juried exhibits. Often these shows take place with the blessing and support of the curators and jury members, and are intended to underscore the difficult job of judging artwork, while showcasing the work of the artists who "almost made the cut." Who is behind all of this?
The organizing committee is Lee Shiney, Chris Gulick, Brian Hinkle, Paul Hudson, and Mande Braden. You can easily reach us by email at salon@artswichita.org.
When is the Salon des Refusés?
The Salon will open on Thursday May 15, in conjunction with the River City Biennale, and will hang through May 30th (Final Friday). The public will be able to preview the show on Thursday, May 15. The opening reception is Friday, May 16. The Redline Gallery will also be open for viewing during regular business hours.
How do you decide which works go where?
The organizing committee has sole responsibility for hanging the show at each location, as well as deciding which works go in which gallery.
What happens if someone purchases my work?
Payment will be collected immediately upon purchase. At the close of the show, the work will be released to the purchaser, and you will be able to pick up your money at the location where the work was sold. A 30% commission will be charged by the gallery, so price your work accordingly.
What happens if no one purchases my work?
Artwork will be available for pickup beginning May 31.
The fine print:
- Although the committee has taken it upon themselves to organize the Salon, they are not responsible for nagging you to bring in your pieces or nagging you to pick them up.
- The committee will take suitable care of the work as it is transported and hung.
- The committee is not responsible for lost or damaged artworks.
- Unclaimed artwork becomes the property of the committee.
- If you have a specific need associated with a work, please talk to us about it at the time of delivery.
- The committee strives to promote the Salon as a positive response to the RCB.
